Key Trends · 2025
01
Solar surpasses all expectations — again
+
Solar PV additions exceeded every IEA forecast for the fifth consecutive year in 2024. China alone installed 230 GW. The challenge has shifted from cost to integration: grid infrastructure, storage, and demand flexibility now constrain deployment more than technology or finance.
02
The water-energy nexus intensifies under climate change
+
Hydropower — still 15% of global electricity — is increasingly unreliable as glaciers retreat and rainfall patterns shift. Droughts knocked 20% off Brazil’s hydro output in 2024. Energy planners can no longer treat water availability as a stable assumption.
03
Green hydrogen: promise meets cost reality
+
Green hydrogen remains above $3/kg at scale — roughly triple the level needed for competitiveness. Electrolyser costs are falling but slower than anticipated. Policy certainty and long-term offtake agreements are the bottleneck, not technology.
04
Energy access and clean transition are diverging goals in the Global South
+
685 million people lack electricity. The cheapest path to universal access is solar mini-grids — but climate finance mechanisms favour large-scale grid projects. Redirecting capital toward distributed access remains a governance failure, not a technology problem.
05
Just transition frameworks are finally becoming policy
+
The JETPs — agreed for South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Senegal — represent the first systematic attempt to link coal phase-out with worker and community support. Early implementation has been slow, but the framework is precedent-setting.

Key Trends · 2025
01
Climate change is already reducing crop yields — not a future threat
+
Maize yields in sub-Saharan Africa have declined 5–10% since 1980 due to heat stress and drought. Rice yields in South and Southeast Asia face a 3°C threshold above which protein content falls and yields collapse. The green revolution’s legacy varieties are poorly suited to the climate they now face.
02
Agroecology and regenerative agriculture are scaling
+
CGIAR studies show that climate-smart practices can maintain yields while reducing emissions 30–40% and improving soil carbon sequestration. The evidence base has strengthened dramatically over five years.
03
Conflict and geopolitics as food security threats
+
The Russia-Ukraine war exposed the fragility of global wheat markets — two countries supplying 30% of global wheat exports. Food security can no longer be modelled without geopolitical risk scenarios.
04
Alternative proteins transition accelerating — unevenly
+
Precision fermentation, cultivated meat and plant-based protein are scaling in high-income markets. But the transition is not reaching communities most dependent on livestock for livelihoods. A just protein transition requires different policies than a technology-led market shift.
05
Soil health as the foundation of food security
+
33% of global soils are degraded. The economics of soil restoration are compelling: every $1 invested in soil health returns $5 in agricultural value. Land degradation costs $300bn annually in lost productivity.
